LANCET Editorial----> COVID Horror in INDIA (My title) !!!

EDITORIAL| VOLUME 397, ISSUE 10286, P1683, MAY 08, 2021

India's COVID-19 emergency

The Lancet#1 Science Journal taking the Indian Government to cleaners!!! I totally agree!!!

The scenes of suffering in India are hard to comprehend. As of May 4, more than 20·2 million cases of COVID-19 had been reported, with a rolling average of 378 000 cases a day, together with more than 222 000 deaths, which experts believe are likely to be substantial underestimates. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and health workers are exhausted and becoming infected. Social media is full of desperate people (doctors and the public) seeking medical oxygen, hospital beds, and other necessities. Yet before the second wave of cases of COVID-19 began to mount in early March, Indian Minister of Health Harsh Vardhan declared that India was in the “endgame” of the epidemic. The impression from the government was that India had beaten COVID-19 after several months of low case counts, despite repeated warnings of the dangers of a second wave and the emergence of new strains. Modelling suggested falsely that India had reached herd immunity, encouraging complacency and insufficient preparation, but a serosurvey by the Indian Council of Medical Research in January suggested that only 21% of the population had antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. At times, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Government has seemed more intent on removing criticism on Twitter than trying to control the pandemic.

Despite warnings about the risks of superspreader events, the government allowed religious festivals to go ahead, drawing millions of people from around the country, along with huge political rallies—conspicuous for their lack of COVID-19 mitigation measures. The message that COVID-19 was essentially over also slowed the start of India's COVID-19 vaccination campaign, which has vaccinated less than 2% of the population. At the federal level, India's vaccination plan soon fell apart. The government abruptly shifted course without discussing the change in policy with states, expanding vaccination to everyone older than 18 years, draining supplies, and creating mass confusion and a market for vaccine doses in which states and hospital systems competed.

The crisis has not been equally distributed, with states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra unprepared for the sudden spike in cases, quickly running out of medical oxygen, hospital space, and overwhelming the capacity of cremation sites, and with some state governments threatening those asking for oxygen or a hospital bed with national security laws. Others, such as Kerala and Odisha, were better prepared, and have been able to produce enough medical oxygen in this second wave to export it to other states.

India must now pursue a two-pronged strategy. First, the botched vaccination campaign must be rationalised and implemented with all due speed. There are two immediate bottlenecks to overcome: increasing vaccine supply (some of which should come from abroad) and setting up a distribution campaign that can cover not just urban but also rural and poorer citizens, who constitute more than 65% of the population (over 800 million people) but face a desperate scarcity of public health and primary care facilities. The government must work with local and primary health-care centres that know their communities and create an equitable distribution system for the vaccine.

Second, India must reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission as much as possible while the vaccine is rolled out. As cases continue to mount, the government must publish accurate data in a timely manner, and forthrightly explain to the public what is happening and what is needed to bend the epidemic curve, including the possibility of a new federal lockdown. Genome sequencing needs to be expanded to better track, understand, and control emerging and more transmissible SARS-CoV-2 variants. Local governments have begun taking disease-containment measures, but the federal government has an essential role in explaining to the public the necessity of masking, social distancing, halting mass gatherings, voluntary quarantine, and testing. Modi's actions in attempting to stifle criticism and open discussion during the crisis are inexcusable.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation estimates that India will see a staggering 1 million deaths from COVID-19 by Aug 1. If that outcome were to happen, Modi's Government would be responsible for presiding over a self-inflicted national catastrophe. India squandered its early successes in controlling COVID-19. Until April, the government's COVID-19 taskforce had not met in months. The consequences of that decision are clear before us, and India must now restructure its response while the crisis rages. The success of that effort will depend on the government owning up to its mistakes, providing responsible leadership and transparency, and implementing a public health response that has science at its heart.

COVID VACCINATION MESS (BANGALORE- I GUESS ALL INDIA Same story)

Over the past 3 days we have been struggling to get vaccination slots at Bangalore. SMS confirming vaccination on a particular date gets cancelled in hours saying Regret!! Paid vaccinations are very few! Free vaccination spots have rush/ lack of social distancing, especially in place like Bangalore with 20,000+ cases.

The 18+ vaccination slots are non existent with about 300 doses /day for a population of 15 Million at Bangalore. (Yes it is 0, in other cities in Karnataka and 0 in few states)....

So be prepared for a long hard ride. Person like me are lucky to have got both shots. Lalitha is due for II round of COVID which technically she can stretch up to 3rd July (90 days for COVID SHEILD)! Radha is due for her vaccination we hope that she finds slot in the next few days/ weeks.

I gone through the COWIN PORTAL and data is interesting! The vaccinations /day has come down from 2.7 Crores/day to 90 Lacs /day.

Karnataka with Population of 7.5 Crores is 6th with vaccination of 1.2 Crores. Still a long way to go in these 60 days of vaccination done!!!
You see the Issue in India, Only 18 Crore People have registered so far out of Population of 100 Crores.... Goes to show TECH CAN only do so much!! How Governemnt is going to reach out RURAL area?? This time in second wave, the rural India is taking a big hit in # cases, and protection of people there is key!
Out of 59,000 Centere for vaccination, only 3000 Is PVT!!! Cost of Vaccination at PVT clinic is about Rs.1300 per dose!! Goes to show exploitation!!!

For People's sake, I hope things fasten up!! I feel very lucky once again as 1 in 3 Crore Indians to have got both rounds without sweat!!!

Shravan Graduation -MS.

It looks yesterday, (March 2019, 2200 hrs) when Shravan told us, "Hello, I Got admission for MS in Computer Science at Columbia University, New York"!! We were more than thrilled, He had almost given up applying that year, (He selected only top 5 universities in 2017, 18) I ecouraged him to spread his net a bit wide. His contention was that, Columbia fee is very expensive, as was New York to live. Besides he has  settled very well and began to excel in his career at TEXAS Instruments here at Bangalore!!

Email announcing Admission March 2019.

Yesterday, (29th April, Thursday) Shravan completed and received his"Masters of Science" (MS) degree in Computer Science. It was a proud moment for us! When the admissions were completed, Shravan informed us that it will be a great occasion to be in New York for the graduation ceremony ! It would have been the first overseas trip for Lalitha.!! As things shaped up, it was very different turn of events come March 2020 and things got worse!

We are very proud of Shrvan to achieve this Masters Degree, in such a tiring /hard circumstance, COVID, George Floyd riots (Especially he lived near Bronx)!! No wonder, within 4 hours of finishing his final exams on 19th December 2020, He took the United Flight to New Delhi. He was not ready to spend a minute more than necessary in New York in such a situation!

Message from Lalitha on Graduation Portal.

Roll Call

Diploma Parchment.

Shravan has since moved to Silicon Valley, and now is settling down there!! We wish him all the very best. He has become second person, in our family in 50 years to receive Master Degree / Ph.D outside India. (My Uncle did in Mathematics, 1966 in Canada).

We must, also thank HDFC Credila for working out a favorable education loan, which reduced some burden on us parents.
(Interesting, 1963, Dad stood as guarantor for Uncle's loan- when even rich relatives shunned away. Uncle,in gratitude, sponsored his brother, Dad, to do his Masters in 1968 ( I was 5 then) at Benares. Dad then went to complete his Ph.D, 1990, when Lalitha entered our life.)

No Slot for below 45 age for Vaccination!!!!

COVIN Portal open for registration at 4pm for vaccination for all in India above 18...

No Hopsital is giving slot!! All are only accepting those above 45!!!  I tried many pincode in Bangalore as well as other cities!!

This is JOKE!!!

Mother's 1st Month Ritual update

From Today, for next 3 days we shall be performing Mother's 28th day ritual as well 1st Month completion ritual here at Bangalore. We shall also be performing the 45th day, 6th month rituals as a special event besides every month ritual (Falls on 5th day following FULL MOON of every Tamil Month)!

Due to COVID Crisis and mayhem of cases in Bangalore, we felt that best way forward is to do remote management with Vaadhyaar reciting the mantras over phone, and I repeat!! Yes, we should have served LUNCH to 2 Brahmins; we decided that we shall perform the same either during second or third month rituals, when situation improves.!! Indeed few of our regular priests are also not doing well (NOT COVID) to attend.! I thought that this best practical way to meet our obligations!

I very much wanted to perform today's rituals at Karaikudi, but due to the COVID situation, we couldnt make it there! As a Compromise, today, I requested our Vaadhiyaar, Kannan (His grandfather started interaction with us as priest in 1972, Kannan has taken over after his passing away)! to perform a Punyajaanam (Sacred water sprinkling ritual to purify "Gayathri Niwas" post mother's departure, similar to which we did on here on the 11th day!). This was completed today, local people were of help to open and clean up the house making it ready!

Lalitha cooked a 6 course meal as lunch, (as per today's protocol with special ingradients) and served to mother's portrait, and first portion to the bird- Crow! It came to eat within minutes of serving!!

Vaccination Update

I am now in to 60 hrs in to 2nd dose of Vaccination. Unlike 1st dose, this one so far is pretty uneventful. I had shoulder pain and stiffness in the first jab. None whatsoever as side effects as of now...!!!

I have received vaccination certificate from the Govt. They also asked for feeback on the performance / experience/ support from vaccination center experience in few questions with rating.! Good move! I was overall happy with both visits.

With the vaccination opening up for all, I am sure the rush for getting vaccinated would be mad! I hope the other family members could manage to get their shots without any logistics challenge. I am hearing of people /relatives getting delayed in their vaccination (1st shot/ 2nd shot) in other cities!

2nd Round Vaccination done today!

With shortage of vaccines and cases crossing 330,000 a day, (13,000 in Bangalore which > Entire Tamil Nadu) I was Skeptical that my appointment for 2nd & final round vaccination would be done as worked out today!

I was in early, at 945am, so could get a shot. I got the COVID Sheild one. I am told, stocks go out by 12noon and then it is all chaos and disorder...

No surprise at that with all press coverage at the mess that is happening!!!! As I was completing the waiting process, the rush began and I was wondering what is Social distance and all, it is impossible in a sense...

My first round was without any symptoms, reactions. I hope this too goes smooth for the  next 48 hours. Lalitha had major reaction/ side effects with headache, high fever,( With mother's rituals, amidst) still swelling of vaccination spot pain even after 15 days.

With Shravan doing his vaccniation at USA, It is now left for Radha to get done her's in coming days so that all are covered.

Mother's 13th day Ritual (Celebrating her life)

We are done with mother's 12 day rituals (Gayathri and Veni could make it, Anand Couldn't). She is now at a better place with her ancestors. I can say with certainty, she must be happy out there, for the rituals that were conducted were of Hindu Traditional aspects going in to details, which she very much loves. I am extremely thankful the team of vedic scholars to have guided us over the past 12 days for every aspect right from Cremation to until now! I was extremely touched, when an Octanegarian vedic scholar, came home, to recite "கர்ண மந்திŕ®°ŕ®®்" for mother, immediately up on her soul leaving the body!
I was able to adjust myself to her needs/ requirements/ trantrums etc, with me showing no adverse reactions at any stage especially over the past 3 years when her health started going downhill !! (I can't say that for Dad, for we almost differed on anything and everything!)!!! More so, Lalitha did her immense best over the past 7 years for both Father and Mother, ever since the Fracture of Father's hip/ leg in Oct 2013, and subsequent 10s of hospitalisation / ICU, for both of them!

Today is the auspicious, 13th day occasion to rejoice her life! I have requested folks to execute a ceremony, at Gayathri Niwas, Karaikudi, today, where she spent good 50 years. We shall be releasing 2 portraits which will now be displayed at our home and shall be used in all our family occasions to grace and bless us on such occasions.
Finally, I am indeed touched by calls, messages, text etc that have been pouring in. Many have got in touch, after good 20 years or so, or some I am hearing them the first time!! Goes to show how much she touched so many people in their lives, !!! I would try to respond in days to come!

Lalitha got her vaccination!

Lalitha got her 1st round of vaccination done today. Second round in about 35-45 days from now.

She was to get herself vaccinated yesterday, but the hospital when called to confirm appointment, replied that "Vaccines are Stock out and may take a couple of days"! (Columbia Asia Hospital) We chose another venue by chosing different pin code.

Amazing to see India has done about 75 Million Vaccinations. That is almost entire population of UK + Australia....!!!

*******************************************************************************

We announce the passing away of our mother Mrs. Vijaya Balasubramaniyam on 1st April 2021, 2am, at her son's residence at Malleswaram, Bangalore. The 10-13th day rituals shall be conducted at the above address.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I have now commenced, the rituals for the mother's departed soul. The ceremonies shall last 12 days. 13th day is cleansing up, and new era starts.

The days 1 to 9 rituals consists of doing prayers and detailed 30 minutes Sanskrit rituals (7am with taking bath at home  and performing place, total of 3 times) (mostly done using left hand, left side), and offering rice balls coated with Honey, Clarifiied butter, Curd, Seaseme seed, and Milk. The coconut water is kept too at the thatched roof place where the soul is considered to be resting for 11 days. Day 10 shall involve Women folks doing the rituals from their end (Daughter, Aunt, Daughter in law, Granddaughter!). Day 11 and 12 is when Soul departs earthly bonds as well as offering to all ancestoral souls.

Day 13 is call to rejoice life of late soul, as well as feed to dear/ near and friends and start life back to normal.

Vaadhiyar Seetharaman (Hennur) Who is leading all 13 days of rituals for departed soul.

The 10*8 Room given to us at ritural place, Malleswaram, for the rituals for 11 days. Center pot and corner pot we do rituals daily with offering of rice ball and coconut to the corner one. Center one is to quench thist of soul!

Overview of the room with 2 places to do rituals.

Rice Balls coated with seasme, Honey, Curd, Milk, fed to soul, passed on to the water body.

Sankey Tank Malleswaram, the waterbody.

Overall, I feel that the quality of rituals, the knowledge, depth of interest, of vaadhiyars, in Bangalore is far superior than in B, C Grade cities. I wonder if this is due to competition that exist!

Alagappa Chettiar.

Today, 5th April, marks the 64th Death Anniversary of Alagappa Chettiar. Tomorrow, 6th April shall be his 112th Birth Anniversary. Karaikudi development was mainly due to his contribution in the area of Education, Science and Technology, ever since Independence.

I posted a blog about him during 2018. I repost the link here.

I owe all my eduction success to the foundation that got laid in my school days at Alagappa Model high School, Karaikudi. I owe so much to the "CHETTIAR" community for all my 15+ years of eduction was done at institutions built by them.  I am glad to see that Institutions are doing great now after 50+ years of establishment.

Mother Passed Away!

My Mother, Vijaya Balasubramaniyam, 78, W/o. Late Dr TM Balasubramaniyam, Scientist, #CECRI, #Karaikudi, reached Paramacharya Feet, on 1st April, 2021, Thursday, 2am here at Malleswaram, Bangalore. The end was rather painless and sudden, after her 14 month struggle / ordeal of various health issues!!!

Cremation done same day, I didnt wait for any outstation relatives (Even Brother/ Sisters etc) due to COVID!!

Mother ritual update:-
1) I had been to Srirangapatinam for second day rituals on 2nd April, (130 Kms from Bangalore towards Mysore)for the immersion of the ash in river Cauvery,(ஸஞ்ஜயணம்). A fisherman helped me walk to to the middle of the river to immerse the remains in the midstream. (Good 100 feet in, chest heigh water). Cauvery river was gashing in full stream. I felt Mother's immersion was done better compared to father's immersion done at stagnant Cauvery at Trichy during Aug 2017.
2) We have decided to conduct all 13 days ceremony /rituals here at our home "AMRITKALA" Malleswaram as it would be convinient for outstation folks to land stratight in to Bangalore. (Karaikudi is 2 hours drive from Madurai or Trichy Airport). As to satisfy mother's never publicaly expressed desire to breathe her last at #Karaikudi and the cremations thereafter, Laltiha and I have decided to conduct the 27th, 45th day and 6th Month rituals, at Gayathri Niwas, Karaikudi (On 4th July, 2021, Gayathri Niwas would complete 50 years of existence)!!

3) I have commenced and completed the 1 to 4th day rituals. We have chosen the Vaidika Sabha near Sankey tank for sake of convinience to adher to protocols. Few of the rituals from 11th day shall be done at home also.

4) Calls are coming non stop from friends, relatives. I shall do my best call back all of them as I am busy with rituals/ organising.

Personally the grief/ emotion of her departure is yet to sink in for me...... I think it could be some days!( I could hold on for 3 days for Dad and then the sorrow dam broke!!)!!

I am thankful to hospital staff at Vikram Hospital Bangalore, CECRI, Karaikudi, medical staff and Cauvery Hospital Karaikudi, for their effort to do their best for her treatment over the past 3 years or so.

24 Hrs Post Vaccination!

I am running slight temperature which fluctuates between 98.6 to 100! I am not taking any tablets to quell the same. I am also feeling plenty of eye irritation, body pain, and thirst. (As such I drink lot of water but this camelesque)! Also there is considerable pain in the vaccine jab spot! (No swelling/ Redness)!

I am glad that these symptoms are appearing to indicate that vaccine is beginning to do it's job and body its!

I am taking things easy for the next 48 hours!! (May be cut down walk, excercise etc!)

Shall keep you updated.

My friends overseas are in marvel at India's vaccination drive!! Something to be proud! I personally feel the world owes a lot to Donald Trump!

Vaccination first round done!

I got my COVID Vaccination, first round done today at the Columbia Asia hospital, Yeswanthpur. It was quick process it took less than 5 minutes. There was 30 minute mandatory wait after the jab. The lady did a great job to make the jab as painless as possible.

The secound round is after 28 days. The vaccine used was Covid Shield by Astra Zenecca. I am told there are still teething issues across hospitals and process is going slow. In fact, some hospitals that are listed have not yet commenced the programme even after 2 days.

Business Travel in COVID WORLD (21-25th Feb)! It is RISKY!!!

Business Travel in COVID WORLD (21-25th Feb)! It is RISKY!!!

After 15 months, (Nov 2019) I decided to make business travel in the so called, post Covid world.  As calls have been coming, and it was getting tough to let go them, I decided at long last after 15 months of staying at home! (Twice did business assignment within Bangalore)  Sunday, 21st FEB 2021 until today (25th) to undertake Business travel.  I took the direct Indigo flight to Baroda and back. It is a 100 min flight.

BLUFF:- I think the crowd and rush is so much that it is not worth the risk to carry out business travel, (more so outside Bangalore) esply from domestic travel for some more time until you are vaccinated. I met 3 people who had recovered from Covid, in Gujarat, and all had source from Wife, Children who had got some other disease (Dengue, Fever) and then these guys got infected during Hospital visit/vigil! Hospital appears a dangerous place.

I decided to undertake this trip based on the experience of son and daughter, who had been to the USA, in the past 2 months, and were informing me that the airports are not all that crowded as were aircrafts occupancy, and it is ok to take up travel. The pictures they had sent also made me feel that it should be ok. Friends who traveled a bit  in domestic sector, a month back also informed the same status of thin crowd etc.

21st Feb, also being Sunday, I thought the crowd should be usually less. I couldn’t have been more wrong. When I reached the airport, the line to get inside airport ,at both gangways ( 5 gates each) was miles long!! Being frequent traveler and knowing  the shortcuts and tricks  for access, I managed to make it through these gates in less time. (But passengers are struggling in the new covid world with Masks, Identification, etc.!!!)…..

Despite doing web check in and having Baggage drop tag with me, the line to drop bags at check in counter were good 100 people and there was no way I would have reached in time at gate if I waited my turn!  I got the baggage checked in through pay priority counter, and went for security check which was another 15 min or so with 100s of people in queue and no social distance between people anywhere. Yes, I did see almost 100% Masks being worn by people at every situation which is a positive aspect. I had also downloaded Arogyasethu app, on way to airport, but no one asked me.

I was given Face Shield before boarding aircraft both ways, at boarding gate, the only saving grace was aircraft was less than half full with many seats empty. Seat besides mine was empty! The airline ground staff didn’t insist on me wearing shield during boarding, but I wore it as much as I can during the cruise mode.  With cloth mask and spectacles wearing shield, makes it very foggy as well as the Face shield visibility is not so great despite removing the plastic sheet fixed in it. It appears that there are two plastic sheets to be pealed off, I did remove one, may be that is the reason the visibility was not good! (I didn’t wear at all during return trip and so now it a souvenir!)

The services inside flight were pretty good with good sanitization, cleanliness, and airline staff in full protection mode. Food items have become costly by 50% or so.

At both Baroda and Bharuch where I spent 5 days, the mask compliance was outstanding, with 1 in 1000 person on street, missing a mask. The issue is massive crowd and lack of social distancing, as well as too much sneezing etc in hotels, etc when having food!! (Happened 2-3 times!)

My conclusion is that I would now wait a good 4-5 months or so, post vaccination for resuming my  Business travel outside Bangalore. I feel with the Indian crowd, un-orderliness, rush as well as Hussle bustle besides jump the queue,  that are part of Indian systems ( You can’t do anything about it) it appears not a risk worth taking despite COVID cases being low or practically none as it is stated in media and newspapers!! It may take just one infected person to set the cat amongst pigeon especially in closed confined environment like Airport, Aircraft, trains and one has few situations where you have to let go mask to drink water or have food or use washroom etc. Also politics of suddenly introducing RT-PCR tests by states, at whim and will, with moment notice as condition of entry in to their state, over the past week is Business travel passenger's nightmare.(Where would you go in a strange place to get tested and await results besides, where is time!???!)

In a country like India where you are on to yourself with no social protection net or financial support from any quarters, as Jack Ma said, it is best to be just alive in 2021 and so business can take a back seat for some more time with one making adjustments in their financial situation.

PS: I shall be getting my COVID test done tomorrow(Friday) ! I guess I cant ignore with so much asymptomatics out there!!!

Update Friday 26th, COVID tests both RT-PCR and Antigen tests done. Results by evening.

Karen Carpenter; 38 years GONE!!!!

4th February, marks 38 years since Karen Carpenter left this world. She was less than 33 when she died in 1983. The music she dished out were mesmerising even today for her adored fans like me who grew up listening to her music through radio. I wonder how crazy we would have been with all the digital /on demand access!! All her numbers are just joy to listen. I leave with my top 3, not in that order. Karen was also a master drummer!!!

1) Jambalya

2) Please Mr Postman ( I can relate this to my courship days 1990 hahhah)

3) I will say Goodbye love! Listen to the Guitar in the end, just stunning!!

As a bonus I would also add, "Calling occupants of interplanatery Craft"!!

Take care, god bless

Back to Blogging! Logged off SM accounts.

 12th January 2020.

I have logged off from all social accounts as of this week, Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook. I shall also sign off from Whatsapp in a week's time as I feel all these platforms are leftist agenda and block conservative folks like me besides making us a product and selling our data and make a windfall.

So this now all back to Blogging the platform I was using 2003-07 before moving to social media. While I am also unhappy with GOOGLE too with their censorship, I would find an alternative platform in coming weeks and post update about the migration.

I am available on my email account at karaikudy@hotmail.com (Microsoft is not spoiled so far, lets see for how long!!!).

I shall be in Parler (Since taken down by Amazon), Telegram (How we support a Russian APP!!!) and Signal as messenger app, in my telephone number.

Take care and keep in touch.

John McCain.

#329
Very sad to wake up to the news of passing away of Senator John McCain aged 81(4 days short of his 82nd Birthday).
He was a true patriot indeed. Despite being grandson and son of 4Star Admirals of US Navy, McCain refused to be given preferential release when captured in Vietnam war and tortured.

I always wondered, if his selection of Sarah Palin derailed his efforts for the presidency in 2008!!

I was also positive that he would lose in Senate seat which he held since 1986 in Arizona during 2016 election, the campaign against him was bitter, but he managed to sneak a win.

Coincidentally, his death comes exactly 9 years on the day his close friend Edward Kennedy with whom he championed the immigration Amnesty reform bill!!

May his soul rest in peace. Interesting, he has expressed his wish that President Trump should not participate in his funeral!! That is some bitterness!! I would think goes to show how much this President like our Stupid Idiot Modi has polarised the nation!!!
