Born in the USA, Tony Peluso, Modi Fall.

 #501

Celebrating 40 Years of "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen

As we mark the 40th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's iconic album "Born in the USA," I find myself reflecting on the profound impact his music has had on my life. Despite my staunch Republican beliefs and his unwavering support for Democratic candidates like John Kerry, Al Gore, Bill Clinton, and Joe Biden, Springsteen's artistry transcends political boundaries and continues to resonate deeply with me.

Born in the USA: A Song of Reflection, Not Just Patriotism

The title track, "Born in the USA," is often misunderstood as a patriotic anthem. However, it's a poignant critique of the American experience, particularly for the working class and veterans. Springsteen's powerful lyrics lament the struggles and disillusionment faced by many Americans, highlighting the gap between the American Dream and reality. The raw emotion in his voice, coupled with the driving beat, creates a song that is both a rallying cry and a somber reflection on America's complexities.

Dancing in the Dark: A Timeless Toe-Tapper

"Dancing in the Dark" is perhaps one of the most infectious tracks on the album. Its upbeat tempo and hard-rock edge make it impossible to resist. Lalitha, has a special fondness for this song. No matter where she is in the house, the moment it starts playing, she can't help but come over and listen. The song's energy is infectious, and its lyrics about frustration and the longing for change are universally relatable. It's a testament to Springsteen's ability to blend deep, introspective lyrics with irresistible melodies.

I’m on Fire: A Song of Burning Desire

"I’m on Fire" is a hauntingly beautiful song that captures a sense of longing and desire with its minimalist arrangement and haunting vocals. The sparse instrumentation and the simmering intensity of Springsteen's performance create a mood that is both intimate and evocative. It's a song that stands out for its simplicity and emotional depth, proving that sometimes less is more.

Glory Days: Nostalgia with a Rock Twist

"Glory Days" is a nostalgic look back at the past, filled with both fond memories and a tinge of regret. The upbeat rhythm and catchy chorus mask the deeper themes of lost youth and the passage of time. It's a song that resonates with anyone who has ever looked back on their life and reminisced about the good old days. Springsteen's storytelling shines through, making it a relatable and enduring track.

Remembering Tony Peluso: The Guitar Virtuoso

This week also marks the 14th anniversary of the death of Tony Peluso, a guitarist whose contributions to music are legendary. Peluso passed away at the age of 60, but his legacy lives on through the unforgettable guitar solos that helped define the sound of the Carpenters.

Goodbye to Love: A Standout Solo

One of Peluso's most memorable contributions is the guitar interlude in "Goodbye to Love." The song, already a beautiful showcase of Karen Carpenter's vocal prowess, is elevated by Peluso's soaring guitar solo. It was a bold move at the time, blending the Carpenters' soft rock style with a rock guitar solo, and it paid off brilliantly. The solo adds an emotional punch to the song, making it a standout track in their catalog. Link to Tony Interview

Solitaire: Adding Depth and Emotion

In "Solitaire," Peluso's guitar work once again shines, providing a deep, resonant backdrop to Karen's haunting vocals. His ability to infuse emotion into his playing complements the melancholic theme of the song perfectly. Peluso's contributions helped elevate the Carpenters' music, adding layers of depth and emotion that have made these songs timeless classics.

Conclusion

As I celebrate these musical milestones, I'm reminded of the power of music to bridge divides and touch our souls. Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" album remains a significant part of my life, offering both enjoyment and reflection. Similarly, Tony Peluso's guitar solos continue to captivate and inspire. Despite differing political views or the passage of time, the impact of their music endures, enriching our lives and bringing us together.

Narendra Modi's Mighty Fall: A Personal Reflection

This week marks a significant shift in Indian politics as Narendra Modi, once seemingly invincible, faces a humbling defeat in the parliamentary elections. As someone who has been a die-hard critic from the day he assumed office ten years ago, I couldn't be happier with this outcome. Despite voting for him in 2014, my skepticism was immediate when he announced a cabinet filled with what I considered unqualified ministers and losers. It was clear to me that Modi's leadership was a façade.

Modi's Downfall: The Ego Falls Apart

The Modi era has been marked by a relentless focus on his persona rather than the BJP's collective vision. The chants of "Modi will do this, Modi will do that" have now been silenced as the people have finally cut him down to size. The reality of his political isolation has hit hard, and now he is at the mercy of turncoats like Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar. For the first time in his political life, Modi must accommodate his partners, relinquishing his egoistic and narcissistic ways. This shift will hopefully force him to move from the far-right towards a more centrist position, and we might even see a reduction in the divisive rhetoric and policies that have targeted the Muslim community. Also Rural community has summarily rejected BJP policies, also 70% Constituencies Modi canvassed for candidates have lost.

The Plan to Expand Parliament Seats: A Halted Agenda

One of Modi's controversial plans was to expand the number of parliamentary seats from 542 to 750, a move that would have disproportionately favored northern states while reducing the representation of southern states like Tamil Nadu, which have successfully controlled their population. This plan, seen as a punishment for the south and a reward for the north's lack of population control, is likely to be shelved now. It was an unfair and divisive proposal that ignored the importance of equitable representation and punished states for their responsible governance.

A Mixed Sentiment: Politics and Personal Life

While I am not a fan of Indian politics or governance, nor do I have high regard for the current state of the nation, this change brings a sense of relief. There's a Tamil saying that resonates with my feelings: "Whether Lord Ram rules or his foe Ravan rules, I don't care. My life will go on smoothly despite the government." This reflects a generation that has thrived in spite of government intervention, owing nothing to the state or the country. It's an acknowledgment that personal resilience and success often occur independently of political leadership.

Tamil Nadu: A Beacon of Resistance

Despite my critical view of Tamil Nadu's cultural values, I must salute my home state for giving zero seats to the BJP, once again demonstrating that divisive, regional politics will not prevail here. It's a testament to the state's commitment to secularism and its resistance to the politics of division.

Looking Ahead: A Hope for Stability

For the sake of the Indian people, I hope this new government, despite its shaky foundation and reliance on opportunistic allies, lasts the full five years. Whether these turncoats will allow it is the million-dollar question. Stability is crucial, even if it's just to avoid further turmoil and to give the people some respite from the constant political upheaval.

Conclusion

The fall of Narendra Modi marks a significant turn in Indian politics, bringing with it a mix of relief, skepticism, and cautious optimism. As we move forward, it's essential to remain vigilant and hopeful that this change will lead to a more inclusive, less divisive future for India. While my personal life remains largely unaffected by the political winds, the broader implications of this shift could bring about much-needed balance and sanity in governance.

80th Anniversary of Normandy Landings today! (500th Post!)

 #500

What a way to celebrate my 500th Blogpost. A topic Very very close to my heart. (So many fictions, Non Fictions, Movies, Serials etc.) I had a chance to visit during my business trip to a facility very close to Normandy, France. As usual business trips takes all your time so had to miss. The world leaders must be arriving (Allied Forces) today to mark the sombre occasion.

Normandy Landings: A Tribute to the Heroes. (Leadership under Fire!).

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, a pivotal moment in world history that resonates with the spirit of freedom and the enduring fight against tyranny. As we reflect on this day, it is essential to pay tribute to the brave souls who sacrificed their lives to keep the ideals of liberty and democracy alive, and to remember the profound impact of their courage and resilience.

The Dawn of a Turning Point

On June 6, 1944, the beaches of Normandy, Northern France, became the stage for one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. Known as D-Day, this operation was the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. The initial hours saw an immense loss of life, particularly on Omaha Beach, where American forces faced brutal resistance. More than a thousand soldiers lost their lives in the opening moments of the assault. Yet, despite the staggering casualties, the Allied forces, primarily composed of American, British, and Canadian troops, pressed on with unyielding determination.

Leadership Behind the Operation

The success of the Normandy Landings was a result of meticulous planning and coordination by some of the most distinguished military leaders of the time. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, was the mastermind behind Operation Overlord. His leadership and strategic vision were instrumental in orchestrating the landings. British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery played a crucial role in planning and executing the ground assault. Their leadership, along with that of other key figures such as Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay, who oversaw naval operations, and Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory, responsible for the air campaign, was vital in the successful execution of the invasion.

The Unwavering Spirit of the Allied Forces

The Normandy Landings were not just a military operation; they were a testament to the human spirit's capacity for bravery and sacrifice. The soldiers who stormed the beaches faced insurmountable odds—enemy fire, treacherous terrain, and the sheer weight of their mission. But they persisted, driven by a common goal: to liberate Europe from the clutches of Nazism and fascism. Over the next ten months, they fought valiantly, advancing through France and into the heart of Germany, culminating in the eventual surrender of Nazi forces.

Uncovering the Horrors of the Holocaust

As the Allied forces pushed forward, they uncovered the true extent of the Nazi regime's atrocities. The liberation of concentration camps revealed the horrifying reality of the Holocaust, where millions of Jews and other marginalized groups had been systematically exterminated. The discovery of these atrocities underscored the moral imperative of the Allied mission and brought to light the profound evil they were fighting against. The bravery of these soldiers not only liberated Europe but also exposed the world to the depths of human cruelty, ensuring that such horrors would never be forgotten.

Keeping the Torch of Freedom Alive

The heroes of Normandy demonstrated unparalleled courage and resolve, embodying the values of freedom and liberty. Their sacrifice ensured that the torch of freedom would continue to burn brightly for future generations. Today, as we honor their memory, we recognize that their spirit of adventure and commitment to justice remains a guiding light. Their actions during those critical days in 1944 remind us of the importance of standing up against oppression and fighting for the principles that uphold our democratic societies.

Legacy of Courage and Sacrifice

Veterans arriving at Normandy this week (Oldest is 107 years)

In remembering the Normandy Landings, we honor not only the soldiers who gave their lives but also the spirit of unity and determination that defines the best of humanity. Their sacrifice was not in vain, and the freedoms we cherish today are a direct result of their bravery. As we commemorate this historic anniversary, we pledge to keep their memory alive and to continue the fight for a world where freedom and liberty are upheld for all.

Indian Colleges: Failing to Keep Pace with Technological Advancements and Industry Demands

 #499

Background

A couple of friends recently expressed their frustrations over the phone about campus interview mess-ups for their children, who are pursuing Master's degrees in Technology and Science. These conversations over the past few weeks made me decide to take up this topic.

Back in my days in the 1980s, I never believed in campus interviews. In fact, there were practically none, except for short-term trainee positions at corporations during vacations. I felt campus interviews created a tunnel vision, severely limiting one's career choices. That's why I decided to move 2,000 kilometers to begin my career, seeking broader opportunities beyond the narrow scope offered by campus placements.

Introduction

In today's fast-paced world, where technological advancements and information updates are the norms, Indian colleges are lagging far behind. The frustration and disappointment are palpable among students and employers alike. Recruiters walk away disheartened by the dismal level of knowledge displayed by graduates, while students feel betrayed by an educational system that leaves them woefully unprepared for the real world. It’s time to address the elephant in the room: Indian colleges are failing to keep pace with the technological and informational advancements demanded by the corporate and industrial sectors.

This blog delves into the stark disconnect between academia and industry, highlighting the consequences for students and the perspective of disillusioned employers. It also sheds light on the vested interests of professors and college administrations, which prioritize profit over quality education. The aggressive tone underscores the urgent need for reform, calling on all stakeholders – colleges, students, and employers – to take action.

The Disconnect Between Academia and Industry

Outdated Curriculum

One of the most glaring issues is the outdated curriculum that many Indian colleges continue to teach. While the world is moving forward with cutting-edge technologies, our educational institutions are stuck in the past. For instance, many engineering colleges still emphasize rote learning of obsolete programming languages, while industries demand proficiency in modern languages like Python and JavaScript. This gap leaves students ill-prepared for the challenges of the modern workplace.

Lack of Practical Skills

Colleges in India have traditionally placed a heavy emphasis on theoretical knowledge at the expense of practical skills. While understanding theory is important, the lack of hands-on experience with modern tools and technologies puts students at a significant disadvantage. Employers are looking for graduates who can hit the ground running, but instead, they find themselves spending valuable time and resources retraining new hires on basic skills that should have been acquired during their college years. I recollect a decade back we tailored some courses in nearby institutions around us in Pune, Bangalore etc. that will make the students employable.

Technological Lag

The inability of colleges to incorporate the latest technological tools and methodologies in their teaching is another critical issue. For example, the use of advanced software, data analytics, and machine learning is commonplace in many industries, yet these subjects are either absent from the curriculum or taught at a very basic level. This technological lag leaves students unprepared for the realities of their chosen fields, contributing to the high non-placement rates even in prestigious institutions like IITs. You will be shocked to see still MS-Excel (Old version) used for Data Analytics.

Consequences for Students

Poor Campus Placements

The repercussions of this educational shortfall are evident in the dismal campus placement statistics. Reports indicate that even at top-tier institutions like IITs, the placement rate is alarmingly low. With only around 55% of students securing job offers, it’s clear that the education system is not meeting the needs of the job market. Agree, that the job market is also dull with situation that is not conducive for full steam growth.

Inadequate Career Guidance

Adding to the problem is the lack of robust career counseling and guidance services. Students are often left to navigate their career paths on their own, with little to no support from their colleges. This lack of direction can lead to poor decision-making and missed opportunities, further exacerbating the problem of unemployment among graduates.

Rude and Non-cooperative Professors

Personal anecdotes and reports suggest that some professors go beyond negligence and actively sabotage their students' career prospects. There are instances where professors have refused to accommodate students' needs during campus placement seasons, prioritizing their own projects over the long-term success of their students. Such behavior is not only unprofessional but also detrimental to the students' future.

Students Left in a Lurch

The combined effect of these issues leaves students in a deep lurch. They enter the job market unprepared and disillusioned, often struggling with low self-esteem and high levels of stress. The psychological and professional impact on these students cannot be overstated, as they find themselves ill-equipped to compete in a highly competitive job market. In India ther word "Conselling" is absent in any walk of life. You are on your own for things that hit you in your adult life. Also the trend is "Asking for help, is seen as a sign of Weakness in this culture".(Rather than strength).

The Perspective of Employers

Disappointed Recruiters

Employers, on the other hand, are equally frustrated. The low level of knowledge and skills displayed by graduates is a recurring complaint among recruiters. They enter campus recruitment drives with high hopes but leave disappointed, having to sift through a pool of candidates who lack the basic competencies required for the job.

Mismatch in Expectations

This disconnect leads to a significant mismatch in expectations. While colleges churn out graduates who may excel in theoretical exams, they fail to produce candidates who meet the practical demands of the job. Employers are looking for problem-solvers and innovators, as well as some basic soft skills like communication, learn and grow mindset, but they find themselves facing a talent pool that is largely unprepared for real-world challenges.

Lost Time and Resources

The result is a waste of time and resources for companies. They have to invest heavily in retraining new hires, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application. This not only delays projects but also incurs additional costs, making the recruitment process less efficient and more burdensome.

The Role of Professors and College Administration

Vested Interests

It’s not just the curriculum and teaching methods that are at fault. There are instances where professors prioritize their own projects over student success, often due to vested interests. These professors may have research grants or administrative duties that take precedence over their teaching responsibilities, leaving students to fend for themselves.

Lack of Accountability

The absence of accountability measures for educators and administrators further exacerbates the problem. Without a system to hold them accountable for the quality of education and student outcomes, there is little incentive for improvement. This lack of accountability perpetuates a cycle of mediocrity, where neither the students nor the employers are satisfied with the results.

The Money-Making Machine

Colleges have increasingly turned into money-spinning rackets, focusing more on profit than on providing quality education. High tuition fees and additional charges for various facilities have made education a lucrative business, but the return on investment for students is dismally low. This commercialization of education has led to a decline in standards and a focus on quantity over quality.

Students' Responsibility

Self-Initiative

While the education system has its flaws, students also need to take responsibility for their own learning. In an age where information is readily available, there is no excuse for not staying updated with industry trends. Self-initiative and a proactive approach to learning are essential for bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills.

Networking

Networking is another crucial aspect that students often overlook. Building connections with industry professionals, attending seminars and workshops, and seeking mentorship outside the college environment can significantly enhance a student's career prospects. Networking not only opens doors to job opportunities but also provides valuable insights into industry expectations. Look at LinkedIn etc. ( Much to my disappointment LinkedIn has become glorified Facebook with Skirt and Blouse with a tie!).

Continuous Learning

In today’s rapidly evolving job market, continuous learning and upskilling are not optional but necessary. Students must embrace the mindset of lifelong learning, constantly updating their skills and knowledge to stay relevant. This proactive approach can help them navigate the challenges of the job market and secure better career opportunities.

Call to Action

For Colleges

Educational institutions need to revamp their curriculum to include more practical training and industry-relevant skills. Collaboration with industry professionals to update course content and provide hands-on experience can bridge the gap between academia and industry. Additionally, colleges should invest in robust career services to guide students in their career paths.

For Students

Students must take charge of their own learning and career planning. This includes staying updated with industry trends, seeking out internships and practical experience, and actively networking with professionals in their field. By taking a proactive approach, students can enhance their employability and career prospects.

For Employers

Employers can play a role in bridging the gap by collaborating with colleges to offer internships, workshops, and guest lectures. By providing real-world insights and practical training, they can help prepare students for the demands of the job market. Additionally, feedback from employers can guide curriculum development and ensure that graduates are better equipped to meet industry needs.

Conclusion

Indian colleges are failing to keep pace with technological advancements and industry demands, resulting in poorly prepared graduates and frustrated employers. This disconnect has far-reaching consequences for students, employers, and the economy at large. It is imperative for colleges to revamp their curriculum, focus on practical skills, and provide robust career services. At the same time, students must take responsibility for their own learning and career planning. By working together, we can bridge the gap between academia and industry and create a more competent and prepared workforce.

The time for change is now. Let’s ensure that our educational institutions evolve to meet the demands of the modern world and provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.

Welcome to a New III World and Banana Republic- The United States of America.

 #498

I was away on Business Travel all week and was back late evening so could not post my thoughts for a few days.

The Death of American Justice: Reflections on Donald Trump's Guilty Verdict.

I am seething with anger and deep disappointment over the recent guilty verdict handed down to Donald Trump by the New York Court. This trial, which has been described by reputable global magazines like The Economist as the weakest case against Trump, seems less about justice and more about political vendetta. Trump himself was expecting this verdict as he said a day before, that they would find Mother Teresa GUILTY.

The Judge overseeing this trial has a glaring conflict of interest. His daughter is known for raising donations for Biden in Million of $( She also works for Adam Schiff a known Crook of a congressman who loathes Trump) and the Judge himself donated $35 to Biden's campaign. How can such a person be impartial? It's a blatant mockery of the judicial process. Furthermore, the prosecutor, who made it a campaign promise to "get Trump at any cost," clearly had a biased agenda from the start. This is not the first time the case has been scrutinized; two previous prosecutors, including the late Cyrus Vance's son, found no merit in it. Yet, here we are, witnessing a skewed justice system in action. The statute of limit was long over. Also few key defence witness was not allowed to testify.

The jury instructions were ambiguous at best, designed to corner Trump. It feels reminiscent of Joseph Stalin's infamous saying, "Show me the man, and I will show you the crime." This entire trial seems like a carefully orchestrated effort to bring down Trump at any cost. It's a sad day when the American justice system mirrors the oppressive tactics of dictators like Putin, Xi, and Kim, who must be rubbing their hands in glee.

Despite this travesty, there is a silver lining. Donations to Trump have skyrocketed, reaching $65 million in just 36 hours, with 80% of these contributions coming from new donors. This overwhelming support underscores the deep-seated belief among many Americans that this trial was unjust. I recollect Sen. Mich McConnel's warning to Democrats (2009) when they removed the 60 majority vote to pass in the 100 Member senate, "Don't forget a day will come when we will control the SENATE". Truly soon Republicans passed 3 Supreme court nominees of Trump (2017-2020) with simple 51 Vote Majority (They only had 51) thus altering American judicial landscape with Conservatives taking control now for generations to come. (SCOTUS nomination is life long!).

I want to be clear: I understand that there are strong cases against Trump which has not been initiated, where he might be guilty as charged. As a loyalist, I am not blind to the truth. I believe in facing consequences once all appeals are exhausted. However, this particular trial reeks of political bias and corruption. It is a stark reminder that the American justice system is not infallible and can be swayed by those in power.

In conclusion, we must reflect on what this verdict means for United States of America, the beacon of Liberty, Justice, freedom. If justice can be manipulated for political gain, then the very foundation of the democracy is at risk. Let us hope that future trials will be conducted with the fairness and integrity that our justice system claims to uphold. Until then, we watch and wait. I also hope Republicans once they take control the Senate, White House, Congress (likely in 2024 Nov) don't go in for Tit for Tat.

Anusham at Gayathri Niwas.

Today, May 24th, 2024 (Anusham Star), marks the 129th Birth Ritual of Kanchi Paramacharya. My late mother was a staunch devotee of the Paramacharya, who was always keen to support Vedic rituals and hymns. Father too did his bit for Kanchi mutt in his own way. In honor of this auspicious occasion, I organized a Vedic chanting session with our Kannan Vadiyar at Karaikudi. The chanting lasted for an hour from 9 am to 10 am, followed by the distribution of prasadam. Five Brahmin priests participated in this sacred event. (Watch Youtube Video)

Today also marks the 41st year of the Paramacharya's portrait arriving at Karaikudi from Madurai. My late uncle, TM Swaminathan, was the original recipient of the portrait in Madurai. He felt it would be more apt at Gayathri Niwas, the house he planned in 1970 for my father. Interestingly, the portrait was drawn by a Muslim painter, adding a unique touch to its history.

Additionally, Lalitha celebrated Anusham at Amritkala. My mother used to make a special dish called "Okkarai" (a sweet) on this day every year, and Lalitha tried her hand at it this year. Given her culinary skills, it turned out well.

This day serves as a beautiful reminder of our family's devotion and the rich traditions we continue to uphold in memory of our loved Parents and the revered Paramacharya.
